21. _S_o_u_n_d__P_l_a_y_e_r__T_o_o_l
Sound Player (invoked from the command line as
_s_o_u_n_d_p_l_a_y_e_r(1)) is a Motif application for playing sound and
MIDI files. Sound Player supports a variety of file formats
including:
+o AIFF file format (.aiff)
+o AIFF-C file format (.aifc)
+o Sun/NeXT Format (.au or .snd)
+o Microsoft RIFF WAVE Format (.wav)
+o MPEG-1 layer I, II audio bitstreams
+o Berkeley/IRCAM/CARL SoundFile
+o Sound Designer II
+o Audio Visual Research
+o Amiga IFF/8SVX
+o SampleVision
+o VOC
+o SoundFont2
+o Raw (headerless) sounds
+o Standard MIDI Files
+o RIFF MIDI Files
This program requires a Silicon Graphics system with digital
audio hardware components (Iris Audio Processor) in order to
play back sounds.
You may provide a soundfile name when invoking Sound Player
from the shell. Sound Player loads this file (if it exists)
and begins to play automatically.
Sound Player supports Standard MIDI File playback. In order
to play MIDI files, you must either:
- 2 -
+o Connect an external MIDI sound module to your
workstation using one of the serial ports (together
with a Mac serial port to MIDI adapter, commonly called
a "dongle")
OR
+o Install the software MIDI synthesizer, a standard
element of the Digital Media Execution Environment
(software systems: _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._s_y_n_t_h and
_d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._d_a_t_a._s_y_n_t_h).
For more information regarding configuring the serial ports
for MIDI, see the graphical System Manager tool accessible
from the Toolchest under the System menu.
For more information regarding the software MIDI
synthesizer, see the manual page for midisynth(1) and the
release notes (Digital Media Execution Environment, Chapter
9).
You may customize the appearance of Sound Player by altering
its Motif application defaults file, _S_o_u_n_d_P_l_a_y_e_r, in the
directory /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_X_1_1/_a_p_p-_d_e_f_a_u_l_t_s.
See your Motif/X11 documentation regarding use of the
application defaults file. See the man page _s_o_u_n_d_p_l_a_y_e_r(1)
and Sound Player's on-line help for additional information
about the tool.

messages when beginning MIDI file playback at arbitrary
locations in a file.
21.2 _C_h_a_n_g_e_s__a_n_d__A_d_d_i_t_i_o_n_s
